Ngôn Ngữ Biểu Trưng Trong Giáo Lý: Sách Giáo Lý của Cha Girolamo Maiorica và Sáng Kiến Hội Nhập Văn Hoá

Symbolic Language in Catechesis: Girolamo Maiorica’s Catechism and His Inculturation Initiative

Bài viết khảo sát ngôn ngữ biểu trưng trong sách giáo lý của cha Girolamo Maiorica (1591–1656) qua tác phẩm Thiên Chúa Thánh Giáo Khải Mông, nhằm làm rõ sáng kiến hội nhập văn hoá khi trình bày giáo lý cho người Việt thế kỷ XVII. Nghiên cứu dùng phân tích lịch sử–văn bản và cấu trúc hỏi–thưa, đối chiếu với giáo lý ngắn của thánh Roberto Bellarmino và nhận diện các bổ sung “theo ý thói An Nam”. Kết quả cho thấy Maiorica vận dụng tiếng Việt bình dân, hệ biểu tượng quen thuộc, truyện kể và cách sắp xếp nội dung theo Tin–Xin–Giữ để giúp giáo dân dễ học và thực hành đức tin, gắn với thực hành đạo. Các trước tác chữ Nôm của ông vừa phục vụ mục vụ vừa là chứng liệu hiếm của văn xuôi Nôm thế kỷ XVII, hữu ích cho hôm nay. 

Abstract

This article examines symbolic language in the catechetical writings of Jesuit Girolamo Maiorica (1591–1656), focusing on Thiên Chúa Thánh Giáo Khải Mông, to illuminate his inculturation initiatives when presenting Catholic doctrine to seventeenth-century Vietnamese audiences. Using historical–textual analysis and the question-and-answer format, the study compares the text with St. Roberto Bellarmine’s short catechism and identifies additions made “according to Vietnamese customs.” Findings indicate that Maiorica employed vernacular Vietnamese, familiar symbol systems, narrative exempla, and an organization following Faith–Prayer–Commandments (Tin–Xin–Giữ) to support catechetical learning and practice. His Nôm writings thus served pastoral needs while also providing rare evidence of seventeenth-century Nôm prose, relevant to present-day cultural and evangelization discussions.
