Abstract

Do not stand

By my grave, and cry—

I am not there,

I did not die.

[Immortality – Clare Harner]

Art has always been bound up with beauty, but the beauty that aims at the Beautiful and the universal Truth of the Grand Narratives has been buried—however much some may still mourn its glorious past. Now, the art of the Postmodern is the free play of the artist in the role of creator and of the audience in the role of carrying forward the schools of art. The brief article below is, first, an attempt to examine the grand narrative and the path by which it legitimates itself, and then to present art as a counter-case, along with the way the little narrative legitimates itself through paralogy.
