The Trinity and Participation: The Theological Foundation for Participation in the Church’s Life and Mission

Abstract

This article investigates the theological foundation of the faithful’s participation in the Church’s life and mission, arguing that participation is not merely a pastoral concern but fundamentally a theological question about the origin and nature of participatio. Starting from the three marks of synodality (communion, mission, participation), the author asks whether “participation” is rooted in the mystery of the Trinity and explores the possibility of speaking about mutual “participation” among the divine Persons. The paper also critiques approaches that directly use the Trinity as a social model, warning that such moves can project human ideologies onto God and foster an “equalizing” or confused notion of ecclesial participation. The author therefore proposes that the Church becomes genuinely participatory only when believers share in the Trinitarian life and, concretely, participate in the mission of the Son and the Holy Spirit within salvation history.
