Overview of the Symposium on AI: Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnamese Christians Today

Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a familiar topic, widely discussed on every platform. However, upon deeper reflection, we recognize not only the opportunities but also the challenges that AI presents to humanity in general, and particularly to Christians. Why especially Christians? As followers of Christ, we proclaim the Gospel through words and the witness of our lives, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Until the age of AI, our way of living and sharing the faith was shaped by traditional means such as catechesis, prayer, and community activities. Yet in this era, AI is creating a new context, with new tools and approaches that bring both challenges and promises for our mission of evangelization. Moreover, the continuous development of this technology compels us—especially Christians, students, and professors of theology—to confront questions about the proper place of AI in every field, particularly in matters of faith and morality.
In response to these concerns, the Catholic Institute of Vietnam and the Catholic University of the West in France (Université Catholique de l’Ouest – UCO) co-organized the symposium AI: Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnamese Christians Today on March 1–2, 2024. The event featured presentations addressing fundamental questions such as: Do machines have souls? What are the ethical boundaries in our use of AI? How can we reconcile the power of algorithms with the sovereignty of a loving God? More broadly, what opportunities and challenges does AI bring to the Christian life today?
