Understanding, Knowing, and Loving in Order to Live the Liturgy

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between liturgy and evangelization within the context of Catholic renewal following Vatican II. Evangelization, it argues, transcends mere proclamation (prophetic evangelization) by incorporating liturgical practices (priestly evangelization) and charitable actions (royal evangelization). It emphasizes that effective New Evangelization requires integration with liturgical celebrations, especially the Eucharist and the liturgical calendar. The author identifies fundamental opportunities presented by liturgical realities for evangelizing both believers and non-believers attending or witnessing these celebrations. The discussion highlights the tension between rigid liturgical norms and the dynamic demands of evangelization, suggesting underutilized moments within the Mass, sacraments, and liturgical year that could enhance evangelization. Additionally, specific challenges for liturgical evangelization are analyzed, alongside practical solutions.
