The Church as a Sacrament," an initiative of the Second Vatican Council, guides the understanding and expression of the Church's nature in today's world. In the Church, the human and divine elements unite. The Church is both a visible sign (sacramentum) and brings grace to people (res sacramenti), meaning the Church is both worldly and divine. From this understanding of the Church's nature as a sacrament, its missions within and of the Church are shaped and carried out.
